ROOTED for Schools & Academy Trusts

Free, Private Carbon Reporting for UK Education

The Department for Education expects every school and academy trust to have a Climate Action Plan. The public sector net zero target means school estates must decarbonise. Funders including Salix Finance and the DfE Condition Improvement Fund increasingly expect emissions data.

But school budgets are under pressure, and existing carbon tools cost thousands per year. ROOTED gives your school or trust the tools to measure, understand, and reduce your carbon footprint, entirely on your own machines, at zero cost.

Protect Pupil Data

Schools handle sensitive data about children. ROOTED processes everything locally, with no cloud uploads, no third-party data processors, and no additional GDPR risk. Your energy bills and operational data never leave your machine.

Meet DfE Requirements

Generate GHG Protocol compliant reports covering Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. Evidence your Climate Action Plan with auditable data that satisfies DfE sustainability expectations and governor reporting.

Zero Cost to School Budgets

ROOTED is free for schools and non-profits under the PolyForm Noncommercial licence. No subscription, no per-pupil fees, no upsells. Every pound stays in the classroom.

Why Schools Need Carbon Reporting Now

Environmental reporting is moving from optional to expected across UK education.

The DfE Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy sets out the government's expectation that all schools and trusts take action on climate change. This includes developing Climate Action Plans, improving energy efficiency, and embedding sustainability in the curriculum. The strategy is not legislation, but Ofsted, governors, and parents increasingly expect schools to demonstrate progress.

Net zero by 2030 for the public estate. The government's target for public sector buildings creates a direct obligation for maintained schools and a strong expectation for academies. Schools account for a significant share of public sector energy consumption. DfE data shows school buildings produce around 8.4 million tonnes of CO2 per year.

Academy trust annual reporting. Multi-academy trusts are increasingly expected to include environmental data in their annual reports. The ESFA Academy Trust Handbook requires trusts to explain their approach to sustainability. Carbon data is the foundation of any credible disclosure.

Salix Finance and capital funding. Salix and the DfE's Condition Improvement Fund prioritise energy efficiency projects, but applications need baseline emissions data to demonstrate impact. Schools without carbon data cannot access decarbonisation funding effectively.

Curriculum alignment. Climate change and sustainability are embedded in the national curriculum across science, geography, and citizenship. Schools that measure their own carbon footprint create authentic learning opportunities that connect classroom theory to real-world practice.

How ROOTED Helps

Scan Energy Bills

Point ROOTED at your gas bills, electricity invoices, and Display Energy Certificates. Local OCR extracts the data. No manual spreadsheets, no typing in numbers from paper invoices.

Multi-Site Trusts

Academy trusts can track emissions across multiple school sites. Full GHG Protocol methodology with 196 verified UK emission factors covering buildings, transport, catering, and procurement.

Curriculum Connection

Real carbon data from your own school creates powerful teaching material. Students can engage with genuine Scope 1, 2, and 3 figures in maths, science, and geography, learning carbon literacy through their own environment.

Your school's data stays on your machine. No pupil information, no operational data, nothing leaves your building.

Education That Practises What It Teaches

Schools teach the next generation about climate responsibility. Measuring your own carbon footprint is the most authentic way to demonstrate that commitment: to students, to parents, to governors, and to Ofsted.

ROOTED makes that first step practical. The local AI guides school staff through what to measure and explains terms like Scope 3 and tCO2e in plain language. No sustainability expertise needed. No consultancy fees. No data leaving the school network.

For academy trusts, ROOTED provides a consistent methodology across all schools in the group, enabling trust-level reporting and benchmarking without centralising sensitive operational data on third-party servers.

Note: ROOTED currently requires an Apple Mac with M-series chip (M1 or later) and 16 GB RAM. Windows and Linux support is planned.
